No sound from UE46C6700 to AV-reciever HW-C500 via HDMI 1.4

I have just bought a samsung UE46C6700 Led television with 4 HDMI posrts. According to the shop these are HDMI 1.4 posts with (ARC function).

I also bought a samsung AV-reciever HW-C500 with 4 HDMI 1.4 input ports and 1 HDMI 1.4 output port.

According to the AV-reciever manual I should plave a HDMI 1.4 compliant cable between the reciever HDMI output port and the HDMI port on the telivision. And ofcoarse connect hte DVD player etc. to HDMI ports of the the AV-reciever.

Then the pictures of e.g. de DVD will go to the television and the sound will go via the reciever to the 5.1 suround system. Sofar so good. This works fine.

Because of the HDMI 1.4 specifications the television should send it's sound to the AV-reciever so it can also exit via the nice 5.1 suround system. Here is where the trouble starts.

I can't get the sounds from the television out of the reciever. At best if I put the speakers (via the menu on the television) on external, the sound also stops if I select TV on the AV-reciever.

Is there something wrong with the television HDMI 1.4 ports?
Did the seller "mistakenly" call the HDMI 1.4 while it should have been some lesser version?
Do Samsung televisions not output sound via the HDMI port? And should I then use the optical port?

I hope somebody can help me, as I am lost.

p.s. the television has to be exchanged due to a none working ethernet port.

That is exactly my problem as well. I am going to the source to get an optical line to see if it is the remedy. Holy cow this should be a no brainer for Samsung something has not been thought out in development. Everyone says the C700 is much better, why can't this receiver be as good, or at least mention this flaw in the manual?

update the firmware for both TV/BR and HT/receiver first - best use usb ram stick for that.

then make sure you use the right HDMI ports on the TV and receiver. Read the manual carefully which port to plug the cable.

Optical gives better sound on my Yamaha system - connect TV to receiver with an optical cable.

I didn't see ARC in the manual, or assigned to any of the HDMI ports.

While I can't speak for other regions, the HW-C500 and HW-C560W models in the US don't have Audio Return Channel features in the HDMI 1.4 ports.

Optical audio is the best option for attaching audio devices to your receiver.

According to wiki hdmi 1.4 has a audio return channel

the set is HDMI 1.4

The reason for buy this set was a) connecting it to a Samsung LED TV and less cables (read no optical cable).

Looks like Samsung can't read specs.
I will return this set due to false advertisement.

I looked at the USA site, and didn't see where ARC was a feature. I even checked the specs:

HDMI 1.4 may support ARC, but ARC also has to be available as a feature on the hardware. It wasn't advertised on the HW-C500. I'm not sure where the "bad advertising" is, but I agree that you should get something that makes you happy.

But as a friendly reminder, be aware that just because something has HDMI 1.4, it may not have the ARC feature.

Your remark about something being hdmi 1.4 may not have ARC return would be like saying you have USB ports but may not support data throughput. Maybe you can get away with it legally but the customer will feel cheated. And in the long run I can't imagine this to be a Samsung policy.

And what I don't understand is that it can't be to hard to implement in the software (they got tonnes of data going to the receiver via Anynet).

I couldn't find where ARC was mandated if the device was listed as 1.4 only that it allows ARC.

I think it's a misunderstanding to say 1.4 is automatically ARC - for the cable that is right but ARC circuitry must be implemented on both devices/sides for ARC to work.

Therefore a ARC hdmi 1.4 port must be labelled as ARC compliant - it's a bit of trickery from the industry.

I can understand being disappointed by not having a feature you wanted. But that wasn't because of wrongdoing or mistakes on our part.

HDMI 1.4 also supports 3D 1080p @60Hz pictures, but if someone buys a non-3D TV, they would also not be getting 3D features just because it has HDMI 1.4 ports.

You'd still need to buy a 3D TV and a 3D Blu-Ray player.
Just like you'd need to get a receiver that supports ARC.

Like I said, I hope you do what makes you happiest. It does us no good for you to have a product you're not happy with.
