Reply 1 : How do I know if I got the L502X?

It has a Sandy Bridge processor in it, so it's the L502X. I'm sure the L501X part number for the display is just because they both probably use the exact same part.

Reply 2 : How do I know if I got the L502X?

Ok. Awesome. Thanks alot! Anyone know if Dell usually sends out laptops before tue estimates date? Lol.

Reply 3 : How do I know if I got the L502X?

Yeah that's the L502x

I think they try to send them before the estimate date. When I bought my old laptop, it came way before.

I ordered an L702X about a week ago though, and it hasn't moved from "work in progress" yet. I'm guessing that's because of the demand + the lack of the fixed chipsets.

What's yours saying when you track your order?

Reply 4 : How do I know if I got the L502X?

Mine is still saying in progress with a a date of the 29th of this month. I just sold my laptop and am shipping it Thursday so Im out a pc for a couple weeks if I get it on tue actual date.

Reply 5 : How do I know if I got the L502X?

Is - ""331-16 - Standard Internal Keyboard - English" --- Backlit or not?

It's Not 'Standard' on the 501x so I assume not.

Reply 6 : How do I know if I got the L502X?

No it's not backlit, but it's still and awesome keyboard in my opinion

Reply 7 : How do I know if I got the L502X?

May i ask, what happen to the chipsets that they had to fix?

Vaio Z11 сrash after RAM upgrade

Hi Guys!

I just upgraded my Vaio Z11 RAM from 4gb to 8gb, by adding Corsair 4gb card. I usually use laptop switched to "Speed". Аfter the upgrade my laptop started to crash every 10-15 minutes. at the moment of crash I have black screen, complete freeze and the graphic LED is switched to "Stamina". The only possible way to restart is to press and hold green button. Is it a problem with new memory card or with graphic drivers? What can you advise?

thanks!

Easy, remove the RAM and see if your laptop is working again. Also, may I ask the model of RAM (link to a product page is sufficient)

Reply 2 : Vaio Z11 сrash after RAM upgrade

Hi!

thanks for reply!

After I remove the card everything works good as before. here is the link to the card: Amazon.com: Corsair Memory CM3X4GSD1066 4 GB PC3-8500 1066Mhz 204-pin DDR3 Laptop Memory: Electronics

I already informed Amazon about return, but I need to know if I need an exchange or better buy another card? Or maybe the reason is not in the card itself.

Reply 3 : Vaio Z11 сrash after RAM upgrade

As far as i can tell, that card should work on your Z. It is unbuffered 1066 MHz running at CL 7 (7-7-7-20). Since you got a Z11, you're probably running a Samsung chip at 1333 MHz at CL 9 (9-9-9-20) like me which scales down to 7-7-7-20 @ 1066Mhz.

Maybe try it again? If the chip is bad it shouldn't even boot right? (someone check me on this). Maybe you didn't seat it properly the first time? Also, even though the Samsung chip at 1333 MHz CL9 scales down itself to 1066MHz CL7, is it smart to use a chip that is 1066MHz CL7 right from the get-go?

In any case, i'm using this chip from SuperBiiz.com:

W1333SB4GV Super Talent DDR3-1333 SODIMM 4GB Notebook Memory - DDR3 SODIMM 200 Pin - SuperBiiz.com

I'd wait til they have a coupon so you can get it for even cheaper, they got coupons pretty much constantly (today's probably right after the end of one). In any case, it's slightly cheaper than the one on amazon and rated at 1333MHz (although superbiiz charges me tax and amazon doesnt).

thank you!

you know the S96S sounds like a really really fast Car

Reply 2 : Official S96S Owners Lounge

anyone know the best driver for this notebook? For some reason in source the graphics stutter a tiny with each step i take and i'm sure not sure why. My FPS is high too..

Reply 3 : Official S96S Owners Lounge

what is your Video stress test benchmark? i got 64fps on it w/ 2xanti in vista. ru u using xp md?

my final exam will end wednesday and i will have time to go and do a xp install. oh btw how do i go back to xp(i do have the cd)?

Reply 4 : Official S96S Owners Lounge

i don't have much experience from switching from Vista to XP, but I know there are tutorials on it. I'm using Windows XP Professional SP2. I can post results on the stress later, but I got a 2400~ on 3dMark06 (eww) and I think that's because the card is underclocked. I just need to know if there are any other drivers for this card and the best program for overclocking it. So far it has frozen with nTune and RivaTuner when I've tired OCing it.

Reply 5 : Official S96S Owners Lounge

hey be carefull man, i have experience in overclockin w/ desktop cards. You don't wanna f*** it up. You might increase the synthetic benchmark(which id on't care!) but in real world gaming only few fps. not worth it

Reply 6 : Official S96S Owners Lounge

Reply 7 : Official S96S Owners Lounge

so far I've been loving this laptop. It really does look better in person. After reinstalling the drivers (this time I got the one from the samsung site, which should be the exact same as the asus one) my performance in games has increased. It's very fast with the t7100 and 2 gigs of ram (one corsair the other kingston). The drivers were mad easy to set up. The realtek HD audio is solid when hooked up with external speakers/good headphones. I was a little disappointed on the 500/400 clocks on the video card, which is a good sign that it's gddr2. This also made it difficult to know how much I can OC it. Despite that, this card has handled some of the demanding older games pretty. It has played HL2 and Counter-Strike on all high settings smoothly along with f.e.a.r, unreal tournament 2004, farcry, battlefield 2. I tried Lost Planet just to see and the fps was way too low for enjoyable gameplay (even at the lowest settings). I didn't play around with the options much so there may have been a setting that would help increase that fps substantially. I'll be making a 8600m GS Screen shots thread soon where people can talk about the performance their getting out of this card. I'll update this post when I make the thread.

here it is: Nvidia 8600M performance, general discussion

Hi all,

I have a newbie-ish question (I think):

I've recently installed XP-pro SP2 on the S96S and I had to set Sata to IDE in the bios for XP to recognize the harddisk, as I'm sure you know.

Now I can't turn it back to AHCI, because XP will only boot in IDE-mode - is this a problem performance-wise - and erh... what does it all mean?

please enlighten me

thanks!!

e6410 vs. T410: comparison review

I have owned both machines, so I'm fit to answer questions and offer a small comparison for those on the fence.

Screen: as far as I can tell, lenovo and Dell are using the exact same screen. The Dell is possibly a tiny bit brighter, but not significant.

Speakers: e6410 wins HANDS DOWN. The T410 speakers and headphone jack are very quiet, and I sometimes cannot even hear movies or quiet business presentations using them or the headphone jack. By comparison, the e6410 can easily fill a room with powerful sound that is extraordinarily clear and crisp, even if lacking in bass. The headphone jack on the e6410 can deafen if desired, and that's a good thing.

Keyboard: lenovo T410 wins. Not by much; the e6410 has a very nice keyboard, and is available with backlit keyboard, which the T410 does not have. But the keyboard on the T410 is clearly more of a pleasure to type on. Given how much typing one will do, this is significant.

Pointing stick: the pointing stick is better on the T410 (more accurate, easier to use) but also protrudes more. Therefore, if you hate touch sticks, you might be leaning toward the e6410, except...

Touchpad: T410 hands down. The ALPS garbage they have stuck in the e6410 is just disappointing. It is glitchy and buggy like all ALPS pads I have ever used. It doesn't always pick up scrolling gestures which can be very frustrating, and the "both buttons for middle click" function has issues on the e6410. Some features on the e6410 are not available on the T410 without using an HP driver, but when unlocked, the touchpad on the T410 has more features and is less glitchy.

Heat for lap use: T410. The e6410 gets hot across the whole bottom due to the single aluminum access cover, while the T410 only gets hot in a few spots. The T410 stays cooler at idle and under heavy load on the bottom; this is because the e6410 has the CPU oriented in a downward direction aimed at the bottom of the machine.

Consequently, the e6410 is cooler than the T410 on the top of the machine.

Of note: the fan on the T410 is higher pitched than the e6410, and you can't really tell when the e6410 is at full throttle but you can always tell when the T410 is, and it's annoying. The good news is that unlike Dell, lenovo allows you to change fan speeds and a program called "tpfancontrol" lets you set up the fans and thermal controls any way you like. I cannot find a similar program or method that works for the e6410 (there was a method for the e6400, but it does not work on the e6410).

Heat (general): Neither of these machines have problems with reduced performance due to heat buildup. Both do a good job at keeping the machine cool, they just have different styles, as above. Both run at full speed even under the worst heating conditions.

Build quality: The e6410 is a more solid machine. It has no cracks or creaks or plastic squeaks of any kind. The entire bottom is a large access panel made from metal and has no flex. It is glorious and simple. The machine does not flex anywhere, although the keyboard on the T410 has less flex than the e6410, even after bending the e6410 keyboard to flex less. The t410 has a number of little flexes and clicky clacky plastic bits. The whole top bezel where your hands sit will move down on the edge, causing a nasty sounding rubbing noise. It also clicks underneath this bezel and people on the t410 forum have complained about it. Otherwise, the t410 feels very very solid. It is mostly top wrist bezel and bottom maintenance panel which seem junky.

Maintanence: e6410 win. The entire bottom panel comes off the e6410 with one single screw. The entire motherboard and system are accessible including cpu, heatsink, fan, ram, wifi card, etc. simply by removing one hefty screw and sliding the panel away. The panel is held tight to the machine by sliding clips which are kept from sliding because they would have to shear through the screw. It's solid, it's tight, there is no play on the panel (there IS play on my t410's access panel, even though it is 1/10th the size). This is as easy as maintenance gets. The keyboard on the e6410 can be removed by undoing some clips under the battery (removing a top size bezel) and then removing two screws and sliding. The keyboard doesn't even have a ribbon connector; it is a single rigid unit with metal contacts on the bottom which slide into a keyboard connector. Everything about maintenance is easier on the e6410. The t410 is also fairly easy to maintain, but you have to remove many more pieces to get to some parts. There is a single small access panel on the bottom allowing you to access only one of the two ram slots and a wifi card.

Ergonomics are much better on the T410. The e6410 has square edges on the front which dig into my hands. The e6410 is not much of a looker, and they used ugly blue LEDs for status lights. By contrast, the T410 has comfortable human-like curves on the front bezel, front edge, keys on the keyboard, speaker buttons, lid, latch, and touchpad buttons. The t410 uses easy to see but non distracting green LEDs for indicators, with light orange on the mute buttons. The dell by comparison is all flat surfaces and hard square corners which are at best uninspired and at worst downright uncomfortable or even painful over time.

Latching Mechanism
: You wouldn't think this would be an issue, but the latch on the e6410 feels cheap and weird and sometimes gets caught on something inside when I try to open with it. By contrast the latch on the t410 is perfect.

Odd accessories: e6410. Things missing on the T410 that I love on the e6410: LED battery check on the battery, wind up cables on the AC adapter, backlit keyboard, status light on AC adapter.. (T410 AC Adapter has NO INDICATION that it is plugged in and working, while the e6410 has an led on the plug right where it connects to your laptop).

The T410 has a "thinklight" instead of a backlight keyboard. For many people, this is actually more useful than a backlit keyboard. As stated below, the T410 also has better utility software by a mile.

Included software: T410. The T410 has very good power management software which Dell simply doesn't have. As a result, the T410 gets more battery life than the e6410 when they both have a 9 cell battery and same CPU/graphics.

Service/Warranty: DELL A THOUSAND TIMES. Dealing with dell is a pleasure, dealing with lenovo is a pain in the the entire time. You will hate your life. But Dell is a joy and they bend over backwards for you.

I hope this answers questions anyone has.

Really? Anyone with a decent Philips can take the TP apart in less than 5 min and spare parts are everywhere on Ebay.

When did IBM tech support start sucking this much? It's not Lenovo's support that you contacted.

2. I don't know or care who lenovo contracts for support. The easyserv station I dealt with SUCKED. They never called back, they took days to get a single issue processed, and I had to argue with them over the phone. By comparison, getting dell to fix two issues on my e6410 was a single call, with no explanation as to why it was broken, and then they overnighted parts to me without me even sending the old ones back. Dell then called me back the next day to see if I was satisfied or if I needed anymore help. It was almost annoying how much they cared, until I experienced lenovo's service. They also send me countless emails to keep me updated on the precise status of my machine, while lenovo sent me only one email with bizarrely no content (no body text) and all the content was in an attachment with no file type. Weird.

Dell will also exchange or return your latitude for the first 30 days no questions asked and no restocking fee. Lenovo just can't compete on this issue.

XPS M1530 Partitionless Recovery!

Hi all,

This website has helped me out no end in the last few months in choosing a new Dell XPS, which is now being built. BUT the very day I went to order my new XPS 15, my XPS M1530 suddenly and rapidly spiralled to its death (I'm sure it must have known!). As it turns out the hard disk seems to have suffered a catastrophic failure but that is by the by.

What I would like to know is if there is anyway I can return my system to its factory settings from its current state. Normally this would be easy as I would have the disks (which I don't) or a burned copy of the recovery partition (which I don't!), or a recovery partition (guess what...I don't!). Part of the reason for this is that I bought the laptop as a refurbished model with 11 months warranty to run, but it would appear that the recovery partition and regular Dell set up was replaced by a more standard Windows Vista set up - so no Media Direct, no recovery partition and no ability to burn the disks.

I have called Dell and they will not send me a disk any more, so my options are short. Is it possible to download the info/OS from Dell in a way that would recognise that it has an OEM license etc? My only other hope is finding someone with a copy of the recovery disks for a similar XPSM1530 and trying to run that. Oh, I guess I could buy a copy of Windows and clean install but that seems expensive considering I had a genuine install of it and it's not worth that much these days and that Ill probably just give it to my mum!

Any ideas welcome and gratefully received.

Thanks for your help!

PS very much looking forward to these hassles being over with the arrival of the new XPS 15!

Reply 1 : XPS M1530 Partitionless Recovery!

Which version of Windows was installed on the M1530 and was it 32 bit or 64 bit?

Reply 2 : XPS M1530 Partitionless Recovery!

It was Vista Home Premium 32bit. Thanks for you reply.

Reply 3 : XPS M1530 Partitionless Recovery!

You can get the disk from Dell, it's called an Operating System Reinstallation DVD and costs about 65 + P&P.

If they won't sell you one let me know and I'll see if I've got a spare one I can let you have.

Reply 4 : XPS M1530 Partitionless Recovery!

I've tried twice and after some umming and arring they said they couldn't send me one for security reasons (I have moved address a lot, not sure if that was the reason) but basically they weren't keen on sending out a copy of the disk. I guess I have had the laptop for three years or more now.

I have to be honest and say I didn't offer to pay them (and they didn't offer the opportunity), but seeing as I have paid them once it didn't seem to make sense when I could just buy a copy of Windows 7 instead. I would probably rather try and find an old XP disk than spend lots on an old machine.

Am I right in thinking that this disk will recognise that it is a Dell XPS 1530 and self-activate?

The Dell reinstallation disk will detect the machine and self activate so no key issues as long as the OS is the same as originally installed, it also has the original drivers (same as a slipstream install disk) so you don't then have to spend 2 hours looking for drivers.

Not laughing at you but this sounds a lot like the day I stopped at the car dealership, just looking mind you then when I got in my car....she didn't want to start! After I ensured her she wasn't getting traded in she started up and off we went. I may have a copy of the disk you need, I'll check and PM you later. No charge, just pay it forward. And yes it will auto activate as long as your machine is a Dell. Windows 7 however depends on your SLIC but Vista shouldn't be an issue.

That would be brilliant LordRasta! Really kind of you to even look for me.

Re the death of my 1530, I couldn't believe it either. If I wasn't a scientifically minded person I could almost believe it had a soul ("had" being the operative word!). I have since extracted my hard disk and have Active@Undelete running on it for the last 48hours. Luckily it looks like I can retrieve a lot of my docs/photos/music etc that weren't backed up so once my new machine arrives I can find a new home for the 1530. Best get looking for a new hard disk!

Thanks again!

Thank you very much for the info pinsb. It seems bizarre that people can know so little about something they own like a software license. Not surprisingly, for the sake of 5 I ordered the recovery disk set with my XPS15.

ASUS doesn't have it.

Reply 1 : ASUS G73Jh Hard Drive Bracket (caddy)

Are you sure? I thought you could just order it from them.

Reply 2 : ASUS G73Jh Hard Drive Bracket (caddy)

Nah, it's not available from them till approximately September. You can try asusparts.eu if you're up to it. I have one on the way from them but no telling if it's the right part or anything. I decided to give it a go.

Reply 3 : ASUS G73Jh Hard Drive Bracket (caddy)

I've heard any of the G series hard drive brackets work. Someone took out one from their G50 for their G73 without any difficulty.

Dunno though. I haven't tried myself so I couldn't tell you first hand.

Only person I heard this from didn't post any pics and didn't answer any of my other questions regarding it. Until I see some pics I wouldn't put too much effort into geting ahold of one of those brackets.

Reply 5 : ASUS G73Jh Hard Drive Bracket (caddy)

I just looked at the G50 bracket and it looks the same as the G73 one, with the exception of the screw braces coming off the far end from the connector (which you could remove anyway.

Spacing's off on it I believe. Seriously though, give it a whirl if you're up for it. There are a lot of people wanting to figure out a solution to this.

Not true. I have a G72 and my son has my old G50VT. Neither bracket fits in the G73. I just use a bit of foam like the G50VT BB version came with in the second drive bay.

Cheers,

Just got my caddy in from asusparts.eu which is currently (as far as I know) the only place to get them. Fits perfectly. What's funny is they order it from Asus and apparently Asus can't get it for you right now.

Reply 1 : MSI GE600 coming out Early April

Looks like an ok system, if a bit generic, with the only real problem being 1366 x 768 on a 16'' screen.

Reply 2 : MSI GE600 coming out Early April

No FHD+ and quad core make this a no go for me.

Reply 3 : MSI GE600 coming out Early April

Nice book, if purely for gaming this will perform fine, regardless of res on that screen, the combo boasts alot of power there, and the machine looks quite nice.

Reply 4 : MSI GE600 coming out Early April

Seems good, but it's too big for what I'm looking for. Switchable graphics is nice, but it goes best with portability.

Reply 5 : MSI GE600 coming out Early April

Better gpu and they would've had me on board

Reply 6 : MSI GE600 coming out Early April

Is that a fingerprint reader ? It's more of an entertainment system than gaming.

Reply 7 : MSI GE600 coming out Early April

Aye certainly does look like it scans fingers,

I agree with the entertainment part for sure, although i'd say its in the high end of entertainment and low end of gaming (Mainly due to that lovely low res lol.)

Reply 8 : MSI GE600 coming out Early April

its a bit bland for a $1000 notebook ...

G-series differences?

hey guys, im new here, but im not a tech noob so dont expect stupid comments from me ok?

Well, I was wondering about the differences between the G-series.

I have a G42 366TX, and my classmate has this G42 that has a slightly larger screen and extra keys.

yet, mine has an ATI GPU and a Core i3 while his is just a Pentium Dual Core.

Yet, I still dont get the differences between the G42, the G52 and the G72.

Yet they all look alike with the biscotti imprint. very confusing from afar to tell apart.

Reply 1 : G-series differences?

Your classmate might have a G52/G72 if it has a larger screen. The G42 series should be a 14" laptop while the G52 & G72 would be a 15.6" & 17" respectively. HP sells a wide range of G series with different configurations in various markets around the world. Since they belong to the same series, they will tend to look the same but can have different specifications/price.

Ask Dell Parts and Upgrades. Just chatted in few minutes ago that backlit keyboard for 14 is still available for separate order.

Correct Processors for Dell 1535

What is the Correct Processor for the Dell Studio 1535

(My problem below)

So I need a little help here. I am repairing a dell studio (1537) for one of my co-workers. While removing the disk drive I ended up killing the motherboard.

Now Replaced the motherboard with 1535 with ATI (I bought the wrong motherboard by accident) and it works but it tells me "Processor Microcode Update Failure"

So, I've searched but am having trouble finding the right processor.

Before you say I'm horrible at fixing computers. It still boots up and I'm fixing this for my co-worker for free (even paying for all the parts myself, so much for my tax Refund)

(Edit) Newest Bios from Dell is installed (A06 I think it was) and still says message on boot

Looks like I will end up using a T8300 800 FSB Core 2 Duo and see how that works

Reply 1 : Correct Processors for Dell 1535

This looks helpful to you: Which cpus are compatible with my dell studio 1535?

Reply 2 : Correct Processors for Dell 1535

Dell Studio 1535 has Santa Rosa so PM/GM965 so any 800 FSB Core 2 Duo will work. Best bets are like T7200/T8300/T8100.

Reply 3 : Correct Processors for Dell 1535

What is the actual processor you're trying to install in the thing? You might just be able to do a BIOS flash and get rid of the error...

Reply 4 : Correct Processors for Dell 1535

The 1537s are Montevina platform and capable of a 1066MHz FSB, however the 1535s are Santa Rosa platform and only capable of 800MHz FSB. My guess is that you are trying to run a 1066 processor on a motherboard that only runs at 800, and the BIOS doesnt have the CPU instructions to run it correctly. You can try to upgrade the BIOS, but that may not help.

Reply 5 : Correct Processors for Dell 1535

Thanks for the Help

Reply 6 : Correct Processors for Dell 1535

Any T7xxx will work. T8100 or T8300 should work. T9300 should also work.

P8xxx and P9xxx will not work.

VAIO Z or VAIO SB?

Hi there, I'm new to these forums so please do point out if I'm doing anything wrong like posting in the wrong section or whatever. I'm not a native english speaker so my english isn't perfect either, so sorry about that. I'm currently deciding if I should keep my VAIO Z (late 2010 model), or trade it for the VAIO SB (March 2011 model). Skip the part in bold if you don't want to hear the background of the story.

Although this is a bit irrelevant, you may ask how I did I come to a scenario like this. I bought my VAIO Z in december 2010, and it served as my laptop for school ever since then. However, given to the enthusiastic nature of young people I have had quite a few close calls with people almost smashing my computer head on (luckily, they haven't). Given that the VAIO Z is flimsy and poorly built (I even had to put a cloth between the screen and the keyboard to avoid damage), it gives me a certain amount of unrest and insecurity.

I discussed this issue with my dad, who just bought the VAIO SB yesterday. He agreed that if I would want to, I may trade my VAIO Z for the VAIO SB. Given that he works in a much more disciplined environment, his computer would be less prone to any damage. Therefore he agreed to trade the SB for my Z, only if I want to.

Anyways, lets go through the specs of each computer:

VAIO Z:

Intel Core i7-640M @2.8 ghz (Turbo boost @3.46 Ghz)

8GB DDR3 Memory at 1066 Mhz

NVIDIA GT 330M w/ 1 GB DDR3 video memory

1920x1080 Resolution

256 GB SSD

Price: 19980 Hong Kong Dollars (~2600 USD)

VAIO SB:

Intel Core i7-2620M @2.7 Ghz (Turbo boost @3.4 Ghz)

8GB DDR3 Memory at 1333 Mhz

ATI Radeon 6470M w/512 MB DDR3 video memory

1366x768 Resolution

500 GB HDD@7200rpm

Price: 13000 Hong Kong Dollars (including RAM upgrade, ~1700 USD)

Advantages of each over the other:

VAIO Z:

The most notable advantage of the VAIO Z is the SSD, obviously. It offers great boot up times along with great file loading times. However, the SSD life expectancy does scare me a bit.

Another advantage of the VAIO Z is its graphics card. It has a slight advantage over the 6470M given its larger video memory. The 6470M, though, does support DirectX 11 if I got my research right (The 330M doesn't)

Weight. A full 300 grams lighter than the SB.

VAIO SB:

The VAIO SB excels in the CPU and RAM areas, in which it has a faster CPU (~17% faster than the 640M as intel states that a 17% difference when comparing Nehalem with Sandy Bridge processors with the same clock speed)

Faster RAM speed

Better integrated graphics (The intel HD graphics 3000 is MUCH better than GMA HD)

Better build quality

Replacable hard drive (standard form factor). I can easily remove that HDD for an SSD when those get cheaper.

Conclusion:

I don't know guys, what do you think?

Reply 1 : VAIO Z or VAIO SB?

Hey, I am new 2.

Anyway, I recommend the Vaio Z all the way, CPU performance isn't that much of an upgrade, and consider that my giving away the Vaio Z you are giving up a Full HD screen. Priceless. If you are worried about RAM speed, upgrade the ram yourself, its cheap and easy.

If it was up to me I would keep the Vaio Z. A really good computer. And after having used SSD's in the Z series the SB is going to seem a lot slower even with the new SB processor.

Reply 2 : VAIO Z or VAIO SB?

Coming from the 1080p, the low resolution SB might bug you. It does for me at least, whenever I look at another computer screen. Performance-wise, I don't think you'll feel much difference. There's hardly anything out there that the 640M can't handle already. And lastly, although the Z feels flimsy, it's actually pretty well-built. The screen can bend quite a lot but it doesn't seem to damage anything. See for yourself, there are hundreds of posts here of people saying how flimsy it is, but I have yet to see a single post of someone saying they broke theirs.

Reply 3 : VAIO Z or VAIO SB?

Is there a big difference between 1920x1080 zoomed to 150% and 1366x768 at 100%?

Scaling has never worked properly.

I'd opt for a Z with 1600x900. Full HD is too much for a 13" IMO.

It works great with 99% of my software, no squinting at all, no eyestrain. I have massive screen real estate when I need it, easily readable when having my Z 0.5m away on the desk. I'd never go with a lower res screen (like on the mbps ~ see avatar) again since I'm used to this uber sharp fonts when viewing pdfs in full page and absolute full-hd bluray pleasure. I run my 1080p screen with 125% dpi. Except my 40" BRAVIA, this is the only screen I use everyday.

I agree, 1600x900 Vaio Z is the way to go. Res is just perfect. As for the computer itself, I don't think i've ever used such an amazing laptop, use to be a heavy desktop user, since I got the Z, haven't used my desktop once. Screen is just gorgeous. wouldn't give up my z for any other laptop, until a Z2 comes out atleast.

Reply 7 : VAIO Z or VAIO SB?

I'm currently trying 1366 by 768 on my VAIO Z. So far so good I must say. Before that I was using 1920x1080 scaled at 150%. I am however, aware that the VAIO SB is using the VAIO display PLUS, while the VAIO Z uses the VAIO display PREMIUM. There's definitely a difference there. Does 1080p screens make videos look more crisp? I lowered the resolution to 1366x768 and so far it plays "Wildlife in HD" (pre-loaded to my computer) quite well. Maybe its only because the video is in 720p so I don't really see the difference.

Reply 8 : VAIO Z or VAIO SB?

1080P content on the 1080P looks simply stunning.

hey guys im currently under the same issue here in australia. i can find a brand new z138gg here locally for about 3500 which still is hella expensive but the new SB coming out which has similar specs and have wondered which one i should get.

dun forget the SB has usb3 and all the goodies and is only slightly more lower spec'd than the z and the SB retails here for 2500 for a ssd drive which is 1k less

ASUS Republic of Gamers Wallpaper

Hey guys,

I just got my new Asus today and am very excited to start using it!

I was wondering where I could find official Asus ROG wallpaper such as the one in this picture:

I tried googling and haven't been able to find where they're located, if Asus does have them up for download.

Samsung LNA850S1F and vertical lines of red pixels

The 850 intermittently shows red pixels flashing on and off all over the screen, scrolling up and down in a vertical fashion.

Is this a known VSCAN issue with LCD's in general or a Samsung problem?

Do I try to adjust VSCAN myself or have a service call placed?

Reply 1 : Samsung LNA850S1F and vertical lines of red pixels

jane keene,

Welcome to the forum.

Is this issue happening only on the cable/sat input, or on all inputs?

--HDTech

Reply 2 : Samsung LNA850S1F and vertical lines of red pixels

I get the red dots immediately upon switching to PS3 on the PS3 menu screen, and after a few minutes watching cable.

It does seem to be getting worse, happening more frequently
becoming more noticeable and more quickly upon start up.

I am using high quality HDMI cables and have clean power, dedicated lines, power conditioning, well grounded, etc.,

This is an LCD issue. I would like a tech sent out to check the VSCAN settings, possibly replace control board, or swap out the 850.

It is obvious this is not an isolated incident,
as there are many posts on this issue with Samsung, LG, Visio, Sharp and other LCD's as well. I would have expected the Samsung to be a better product.

Sony units do not seem to be effected with this problem, so there must be a common design flaw/ part defect within the other LCD products.

This unit is less than three months old, and I am not happy.

Zip Code - 19053
Who is the service provider,as I can't seem to find one in my area.

Reply 3 : Samsung LNA850S1F and vertical lines of red pixels

I must have hit a nerve @ Samsung. No response as of yet,and no service in my area.

Buyer Beware.
I am not going away and we still start blogging other sites until I get some support.

Samsung tech where are you?

Reply 4 : Samsung LNA850S1F and vertical lines of red pixels

jane keene,

Currently it's just me answering questions on the board. I apologize for the delay - I'm helping everyone's issues, and post traffic is high this week.

I'm not sure how "not isolated" this is, as I've seen very few posts regarding red scan lines, but regardless, give 800-SAMSUNG a call, open up a service ticket and they'll assign an authorized service tech in your area to come out and diagnose/repair your television.

I don't expect anyone to go away, and actually, I look forward to assisting in fixing issues.

--HDTech

Reply 5 : Samsung LNA850S1F and vertical lines of red pixels

We have had our Samsung LN46A650A1F up and running for only about 1 1/2 months. Now (today for the first time) we have vertical color lines (mostly red, but other colors as well) on both satellite and OTA antenna signals.

What to do?

Reply 6 : Samsung LNA850S1F and vertical lines of red pixels

My issue with red pixels flashing on and off in a vertical fashion all across the screen is still an issue. Samsung sent a tech out and of course it didn't happen.

Problem is very intermittent and only seems to appear after LCD has been on for over a hour.

Once the red pixels start flashing, If I shut every thing down the red pixels go away, and then re-appear in about a half hour.

I am going to have to get a hard failure before Samsung will be able to diagnose so I have to live with it for now.

Reply 7 : Samsung LNA850S1F and vertical lines of red pixels

jane keene,

If you can get a digital photograph of the problem and upload it to Photobucket.com or imageshack.com, along with your transaction number, I'd be happy to forward that to our service department for your consideration.

Keep me posted - I'm sorry to hear that you weren't able to get it fixed, but maybe I can assist.

Reply 8 : Samsung LNA850S1F and vertical lines of red pixels

I have a digital pic of red lines/ dots.

Funny when I turn of LCD for a minute or so and turn back on
red dots and dashes are gone.

Reply 9 : Samsung LNA850S1F and vertical lines of red pixels

Did you find out what the problem was? I having this problem with my 40in Samsung

Reply 10 : Samsung LNA850S1F and vertical lines of red pixels

1st_on_the_Turf,

How is your satellite connected to the television, and do you have any other inputs where this happens?

--HDTech

Reply 11 : Samsung LNA850S1F and vertical lines of red pixels

The satellite is connected by component video, we also have OTA antenna, Wii (composite) and DVD (HDMI). The vertical lines appear with all sources. I disconnected the OTA antenna cable, suspecting some related interference was the culprit, but to no avail.

Reply 12 : Samsung LNA850S1F and vertical lines of red pixels

1st_on_the_Turf,

It definitely sounds like an issue internally with the television. I'd suggest calling 800-SAMSUNG to schedule a service on your unit.

Keep me posted.

Reply 13 : Samsung LNA850S1F and vertical lines of red pixels

I'm having the same problem with a brand new 46" C650. It's doing it intermittently from different sources. Not very happy.

Reply 14 : Samsung LNA850S1F and vertical lines of red pixels

scrapps76,

I'm sorry to hear that you're having this issue. It's not common on the 2010 models that I've seen, but encourage you to either work with your retailer or call 800-SAMSUNG to have them come out and inspect your set.

Reply 15 : Samsung LNA850S1F and vertical lines of red pixels

We have a Samsung 850 52" that we purchased in January of 2009. It was great until this past fall (fall 2010). We now get red lines. They always come in a pair, 2 very thin solid red lines about 2 inches apart from each other. They're typically on the right hand side of the screen about an inch from the edge. I say typically because yesterday they started appearing on the bottom of the screen. Again, always 2 thin lines about 2 inches apart from each other. Very strange. They don't flash or change colors. They're solid lines. Always red. They're not dependent on tne video source, happening when we are watching satellite tv live or recorded, PS3 games or DVD's. They aren't always there, they will come on and stay on for a while (sometimes just around 30 minutes other times for a few hours), but they don't flash. They are either there or not.

Obviously we're out of warranty, but would love some insight into what the heck is going on. Thanks!

X200s Question???

I found a New X200s on EBay for $595 but there's one problem...the seller lists it as new, unopened but it has an Intel Celeron M 723 processor. I didn't think Lenovo sold any X200s' with a Celeron processor??? Am I just mistaken? Is this a good deal?

Reply 1 : X200s Question???

They did:

Lenovo Support - System service parts - ThinkPad X200, X200s, X200si, X201, X201i, X201s

Reply 2 : X200s Question???

OK...is this a decent deal? Isn't the Celeron processor extremely slow?

Reply 3 : X200s Question???

It could be a good deal. Don't let the Celeron name turn you off, as the Celeron M ULV 723 is a decent low-voltage, 64-bit, single-core processor.

Intel Celeron M Processor ULV 723 (1M Cache, 1.20 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
You intended use of the notebook would be a key decision factor.

They did sell X200s (though not, AFAIK, X200ss) with it, primarily in overseas markets to capture the low end of the market.

I'd skip it. Here's why: the 723 lacks a few of the power saving features of its higher-end siblings. You can probably find a good-condition X200s with an LV chip for less than that (though finding one with a ULV CPU will be trickier.)

Reply 5 : X200s Question???

Ok, I think I will pass on this one then...intended use was basic document writing, PowerPoint, work related stuff.

Reply 6 : X200s Question???

That Celeron should tackle office tasks no problems. Unfortunately it being a ULV processor, it is BGA soldered, no upgrading later on.

Reply 7 : X200s Question???

It's not a ULV processor, but it is soldered to the planar.

Oh, it's plenty powerful for that. It just won't offer as good power efficiency as the un-crippled Core 2 series processors that the X200s shipped with. The only reason I advised against it was the cost -- $600 can easily get you an X200s with a real LV/ULV chip, so there's not much reason (IMHO) to settle for less.

Reply 9 : X200s Question???

For that price you are getting Netbook type of performance, sounds like a poor investment.

DV4Z-1000 Pixelated at the bottom of LCD?

It's been over a year now and my warranty is out (just my luck). I was wondering what is causing this problem? Could it be that the cable connecting the LCD screen to the motherboard is loose? If so I can open it up and try reattaching!

G73JW Spindown problem

Hi

Sorry for opening new threat but i have a problem with my 73jw

I like this notebook and dont want to send it back so i hope to get help here.

My hard drives are spinning down and cousing freezes. After reading all threats about this in this forum i saw a few post but none of this solutions help for me.

I cant get my fw updated to sd24 (now sd22)

like allready here posted i stuck at the instalation with the boot iso cd.

other threat The NEW G73JW-3DE, INFO, Specs, and Pre-Ordering Available!

i have tried it like 100 times and nothing works for me.Maybe its a simple misstake im doing but cant find it.

Hope on some help

Reply 1 : G73JW Spindown problem

I just updated my drives last night on my G73SW. I assume the procedure is the same for the JW. Let me get the CD (you need to burn the ISO and run a command) to verify what I ran.

EDIT: Can't read the disk image listing in DOS without booting it which I am too lazy to do. Anyways, the gist of it is when you get to the selection menu, hit ctrl+c to exit out.

Then type:

Code:

dir

It should list a bunch of files. One will have the extension LOD, probably starting with an A. Find the name of that file and note it, then type in the following command:

Code:

FDL487A -m Anak -f -i ST95005620AS -s -x -b -v -a 20

Replace the red bit with the filename you identified.

The reasoning behind this is explained here:

Reply 2 : G73JW Spindown problem

ya thats what you need to get you need to update the firmware

go to seagate theres a lot of info there

Reply 3 : G73JW Spindown problem

I just read the post that NaterGater referenced and you should sure give the command he lists a try. It pretty much forces the update and I don't see how it could fail if you do it that way.

I just bought one of these drives on Friday. I have a G73JH-X1 which came with one 500GB non-hybrid Seagate drive. I popped a shiny new Momentus XT hybrid in and cloned the existing one to it. Of course I already knew about the issues that are fixed with SD24 so I immediately upgraded to it.

I played several games so far and I can tell you it's a darn fast drive. No complaints from me. My system boots in half the time it used to take and it's an excellent performer as a mechanical drive. I've done some rudimentary testing by copying big files from the regular drive to the hybrid drive and then back to the regular drive. The hybrid drive is definitely faster. I think you'll be pleased with it if you can get it upgraded to SD24.

Maybe the XTs are timebombs.

Reply 5 : G73JW Spindown problem

this was the code i had to use:

FDL487A -m Anak -f AT01AY.LOD -i ST95005620AS -s -x -b -v -a 20

ty for ur help

Reply 6 : G73JW Spindown problem

Just a fair word of warning to those thinking about flashing this firmware to the Momentus XT drives:

It did fix my lagging/stuttering problems while using Altium Design Summer '09, but it has also had a noticeable negative impact on battery life... on the order of around 20-25% decrease. It seems Seagate still has some kinks to work out though, so maybe things will improve somewhat from here.

Reply 7 : G73JW Spindown problem

At least seagate has fessed up to the problem, and is working on it.

Reply 8 : G73JW Spindown problem

Please help I can not get the updating of the Seagate Momentus XT

Yes, I had to switch from AHCI mode to IDE mode in the bios as well. Glad you got yours flashed.

HT-C6930: Noisy when loading a disc

Hi, does anyone think that the 6930 is quite noisy (mechanically, that is) when it loads a disc, whether CD/DVD/Blu?

It seems so to me, unless I've got a duff one. I thought that this model was meant to be quiet. It's makes more racket than my 10 year old Wharfedale 750 dvd player.

Reply 1 : HT-C6930: Noisy when loading a disc

ShuggMcGlummfer,

I'm sorry to hear that you're having this issue with your player.

If the unit sounds noisier than you believe it should be, you may want to have the player serviced. If you're interested in going this route, you can try calling 800-SAMSUNG for the Samsung customer service center. Unfortunately, without being able to hear the unit, it's difficult to know if this is normal or not. But that said it sounds like you have a concern, and the best recourse is to have it looked at.

Thanks. I'll see if I can find any in shops to compare it with. Only had it 2 weeks.

T410s Dead Pixel

Just wanted to know what other people would do if they were in my place...

I got a T410s from the Lenovo outlet to replace my x301 .... when I received it, I had one dead pixel on it.... We did call up Lenovo and they have offered for me to send it to the depot to review, but they mentioned that they have a minimum of 3 dead pixel in order to get a replacement of a screen ...

Has anyone ever sent in a laptop with one dead pixel and gotten it replaced...

I dont see myself noticing it much unless I am watching a video on full screen (it is a green one)

I did various software methods of getting rid of it, and also tried to massage it away, and no luck. ...

Reply 1 : T410s Dead Pixel

Unless its terrible, one pixel shouldnt be too much of concern (tho I havent seen dead pixels in real life in a while), however if its ugly and makes your life uneasy then I would suggest you to call local service and have either tech at your house or take your laptop to service and see whether you can negotiate into new LCD or not

Reply 2 : T410s Dead Pixel

technically you have a stuck subpixel, not a dead pixel. dead pixels/subpixels are black.

in any case, 3 or more defects is what it takes for a replacement: Lenovo Support - Display (LCD) replacement for defective pixels - ThinkPad

Reply 3 : T410s Dead Pixel

If it's under their return policy window, I would send it back and order another one if it bugs you that much.

Reply 4 : T410s Dead Pixel

Replace it under warranty mate.

Reply 5 : T410s Dead Pixel

The problem is that I bought it from the refurb store and since it is not defective there would be a restocking fee on it....

Otherwise I love the laptop it is starting to grow on me... and I am starting to not miss my x301 as much (I know that is a shocker since I am such a pro x301 person)

That's what they tell you so you'll keep it. Rule of thumb is if you return it cause you didn't like it i.e. color, it looks too wide or some dumb reason like it makes your cat sad, most companies including Dell will charge a restocking fee. OTOH if there is a legitimate reason you don't like it you are entitled to a full reimbursement with no restocking fee.

It sounds like that pixel is bothering you and it should if you don't like seeing them. If the CSR says they will charge a restocking fee ask to speak to a supervisor. If you paid via credit card call the credit card company and dispute the charge.

That might help in getting no restocking fee applied to his case or get him free screen replacement

Be polite and explain your situation.

No need for that really. All the OP has to do is to tell them that he won't accept or settle having to work with a screen that has a dead pixel and that he expected more from the ThinkPad brand. And that they need to supply him with a functional notebook with 0 dead or stuck pixels or that he'll return it.

Reply 8 : T410s Dead Pixel

Ok, thats weird, where did my post go ?

I mean, if machine is not in condition one expected and is intended to be used for certain tasks and if this defect his laptop has is not letting him to utilise his laptop the way it was intended, then why not try to negotiate with Lenovo regarding free repair?

Reply 9 : T410s Dead Pixel

Well I got the RMA not because of the pixel. But the wifi card it keeps dropping connection to the wireless router. I really want to keep it since I got a great deal.

The wireless thing is just killing it for me.

x120e: Which install has OSD?

I have been to the drivers and downloads page, but can't seem to get the on screen display to work. Which download contains the on screen display program?

Reply 1 : x120e: Which install has OSD?

Should be this: Lenovo Support - Hotkey Features Integration for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), Vista (32-bit, 64-bit), XP (32-bit, 64-bit) and 2000 - ThinkPad

This package contains the following sub packages:

- On Screen Display

- FullScreen Magnifier

- System Interface Driver

- Display Utility

- AutoScroll Utility

Reply 2 : x120e: Which install has OSD?

does anyone know what driver/utility allows the Fn+ End key to work? I'm not sure what it does but I can't find it.

Reply 3 : x120e: Which install has OSD?

That should be the the power manager software (not the drive one). To get fn+f8 working you should install the ultranav software.

Reply 4 : x120e: Which install has OSD?

You need to use the OEM Graphics Driver in combination with Hotkeys Integration suggested by AboutThreeFitty for the OSD to work. Using a generic driver from the vendor (or Windows) directly will not have Lenovo's Hotkeys implementation for it to work.

Video, but no sound LN46b550

So today the tv worked fine then tonight all I have is video but no sound. PS3 same thing. The DVD player however works fine. All 3 hooked up HDMI. I know the power went out at my house today but not sure if that did anything. What do I do??

The Samsung support people are telling me to download and install the newest firmware. Should I?

I have done all the obvious things, check mute, check volume, check connections, check sound settings. Im lost!

Interchangable Parts

I Had a thought (stand back) that a list of interchangable parts might be useful. In some cases it can save money. I will start with the CF-18 pcmcia cover...that alot of machines are missing. Some people charge up to $40 for one of these. Well the CF-29 Battery bay door will work and I bought 5 or so lat week for under $10 shipped....Next...

Reply 1 : Interchangable Parts

We already had a thread like this here on NBR... Hmmmm, where was it...

On my website HERE we have it too which I started back in December: ~Toughbook Talk~ Toughbook Discussion • View topic - Interesting Toughbook Qwarks...

Reply 2 : Interchangable Parts

good idea, but I tried it(the battery bay door from a cf-29 ETN model) on a cf-18DHAZXKM model for the pcmcia and it is just a tad bit shorter and just a tad bit narrower, the door will not close in this particular instance. Maybe another later mk 3 or mk4-5 would work. At least it didn't work for me in this instance, but they do look almost identical..........Driller

The ACER is the atypical XP netbook that has no redeeming features. With the intel GMA you find it can't play video full screen and well, why this unit is attractive must be on price alone.

Both look to be incapable of full screen video play. This relegates them to simple tasks which you may want to pick solely on price OR keep shopping for what fits your needs.
