M1530 - Odd display problem help!!

Hello all,

I've got a M1530, its about 3 years old now, generally its been okay apart from a hard drive dying but recently I've started to get a weird display problem.. about 75% of the screen goes corrupt, see pic below.

Initially just tilting the screen a very small amount would fix it, or you could gently press on the casing on the left hand side and it would go away.. tilting the screen would fix it for good but pressing on the casing only solved it as long as you held your thumb there.

As of tonight tilting the screen no longer works Pressing still does - I've attached a video so you can see.

Basically I'm not sure where to go to start looking for the problem, its obviously hardware but I'm not sure if I should be looking for a dodgy connection at the hinge or if the screen has gone bad ?

This is the upgrade screen - I remember that from when I bought it, it runs a 1440 x 900 resolution

Grateful for any help...

I've stripped it down, the screen is now detached from the chassis and is laid flat on the table, I've removed the bezel around the screen, same thing applies - if I touch the left hand side of the screen it will "fix" the problem. So I guess I'm going to be into buying a new screen. Is this a common thing ?

This one is a LG/Phillips LP154WP1 (TL)(A2) - any advice on reliable sources (UK based) for spares is appreciated!

I've never never seen that happened before, but those of us who still have xps 1530's all of our screens are apparently dying. If you stripped it down and its still like that then its prolly best to replace it since u cant really open it any further. Which is the best screen for the replacement and where can I get it.

Edit

Put a paper clip on it or a clothes pin?

If you get a replacement, now is your chance to upgrade to a higher resolution if you'd like.

LG LP154WU1(TL)(A2) and LG LP154WU1(A1)(K3) are both WUXGA (1920x1200) displays that should be compatible with the M1530. (Basically anything that starts with LP154WU1 should work just fine)

But either way it'll probably be difficult to fix that issue without buying a replacement.

EDIT: and 1680x1050 would be LG LP154WE2.

But if you want to stay 1440x900, then the LG LP154WP1(TL)(A2) should be a good replacement. It should be better quality than any of the Samsungs you might get if you just searched "M1530 replacement WXGA+"

I hadn't thought of upgrading.. I wonder what the max resolution the graphics card is.. hmm.

I did a bit of searching on ebay and found 3 sellers, 2 of which warn that you can't just buy a LP154WP1 TL A2 - there are at least two versions with the same part number, one works with dell, the others don't. Both sellers sell both versions for the same price..

Anyone ever heard of that?

The Dell XPS M1530 had options for 1280x800, 1440x900, 1680x1050, and 1920x1200, so whichever you go with you should be fine.

Do the connections differ between the CCFL and LED screens? If not any LG screen would be best correct? But it it differs did LG make a LED one?

Well I ordered a WXGA+ replacement screen, should be here tomorrow..

Someone suggested that the problem the original screen has can be caused by closing the lid by pulling the corner of the lid down, the theory is that this twists the screen and eventually causes damage. A bit odd because I don't often close the lid, normally its left on the desk ready to use.. ah well..

Hopefully the new one will go in easily..
