Reply 1 : How do I know if I got the L502X?

It has a Sandy Bridge processor in it, so it's the L502X. I'm sure the L501X part number for the display is just because they both probably use the exact same part.

Reply 2 : How do I know if I got the L502X?

Ok. Awesome. Thanks alot! Anyone know if Dell usually sends out laptops before tue estimates date? Lol.

Reply 3 : How do I know if I got the L502X?

Yeah that's the L502x

I think they try to send them before the estimate date. When I bought my old laptop, it came way before.

I ordered an L702X about a week ago though, and it hasn't moved from "work in progress" yet. I'm guessing that's because of the demand + the lack of the fixed chipsets.

What's yours saying when you track your order?

Reply 4 : How do I know if I got the L502X?

Mine is still saying in progress with a a date of the 29th of this month. I just sold my laptop and am shipping it Thursday so Im out a pc for a couple weeks if I get it on tue actual date.

Reply 5 : How do I know if I got the L502X?

Is - ""331-16 - Standard Internal Keyboard - English" --- Backlit or not?

It's Not 'Standard' on the 501x so I assume not.

Reply 6 : How do I know if I got the L502X?

No it's not backlit, but it's still and awesome keyboard in my opinion

Reply 7 : How do I know if I got the L502X?

May i ask, what happen to the chipsets that they had to fix?

Vaio Z11 сrash after RAM upgrade

Hi Guys!

I just upgraded my Vaio Z11 RAM from 4gb to 8gb, by adding Corsair 4gb card. I usually use laptop switched to "Speed". Аfter the upgrade my laptop started to crash every 10-15 minutes. at the moment of crash I have black screen, complete freeze and the graphic LED is switched to "Stamina". The only possible way to restart is to press and hold green button. Is it a problem with new memory card or with graphic drivers? What can you advise?

thanks!

Easy, remove the RAM and see if your laptop is working again. Also, may I ask the model of RAM (link to a product page is sufficient)

Reply 2 : Vaio Z11 сrash after RAM upgrade

Hi!

thanks for reply!

After I remove the card everything works good as before. here is the link to the card: Amazon.com: Corsair Memory CM3X4GSD1066 4 GB PC3-8500 1066Mhz 204-pin DDR3 Laptop Memory: Electronics

I already informed Amazon about return, but I need to know if I need an exchange or better buy another card? Or maybe the reason is not in the card itself.

Reply 3 : Vaio Z11 сrash after RAM upgrade

As far as i can tell, that card should work on your Z. It is unbuffered 1066 MHz running at CL 7 (7-7-7-20). Since you got a Z11, you're probably running a Samsung chip at 1333 MHz at CL 9 (9-9-9-20) like me which scales down to 7-7-7-20 @ 1066Mhz.

Maybe try it again? If the chip is bad it shouldn't even boot right? (someone check me on this). Maybe you didn't seat it properly the first time? Also, even though the Samsung chip at 1333 MHz CL9 scales down itself to 1066MHz CL7, is it smart to use a chip that is 1066MHz CL7 right from the get-go?

In any case, i'm using this chip from SuperBiiz.com:

W1333SB4GV Super Talent DDR3-1333 SODIMM 4GB Notebook Memory - DDR3 SODIMM 200 Pin - SuperBiiz.com

I'd wait til they have a coupon so you can get it for even cheaper, they got coupons pretty much constantly (today's probably right after the end of one). In any case, it's slightly cheaper than the one on amazon and rated at 1333MHz (although superbiiz charges me tax and amazon doesnt).

thank you!

you know the S96S sounds like a really really fast Car

Reply 2 : Official S96S Owners Lounge

anyone know the best driver for this notebook? For some reason in source the graphics stutter a tiny with each step i take and i'm sure not sure why. My FPS is high too..

Reply 3 : Official S96S Owners Lounge

what is your Video stress test benchmark? i got 64fps on it w/ 2xanti in vista. ru u using xp md?

my final exam will end wednesday and i will have time to go and do a xp install. oh btw how do i go back to xp(i do have the cd)?

Reply 4 : Official S96S Owners Lounge

i don't have much experience from switching from Vista to XP, but I know there are tutorials on it. I'm using Windows XP Professional SP2. I can post results on the stress later, but I got a 2400~ on 3dMark06 (eww) and I think that's because the card is underclocked. I just need to know if there are any other drivers for this card and the best program for overclocking it. So far it has frozen with nTune and RivaTuner when I've tired OCing it.

Reply 5 : Official S96S Owners Lounge

hey be carefull man, i have experience in overclockin w/ desktop cards. You don't wanna f*** it up. You might increase the synthetic benchmark(which id on't care!) but in real world gaming only few fps. not worth it

Reply 6 : Official S96S Owners Lounge

Reply 7 : Official S96S Owners Lounge

so far I've been loving this laptop. It really does look better in person. After reinstalling the drivers (this time I got the one from the samsung site, which should be the exact same as the asus one) my performance in games has increased. It's very fast with the t7100 and 2 gigs of ram (one corsair the other kingston). The drivers were mad easy to set up. The realtek HD audio is solid when hooked up with external speakers/good headphones. I was a little disappointed on the 500/400 clocks on the video card, which is a good sign that it's gddr2. This also made it difficult to know how much I can OC it. Despite that, this card has handled some of the demanding older games pretty. It has played HL2 and Counter-Strike on all high settings smoothly along with f.e.a.r, unreal tournament 2004, farcry, battlefield 2. I tried Lost Planet just to see and the fps was way too low for enjoyable gameplay (even at the lowest settings). I didn't play around with the options much so there may have been a setting that would help increase that fps substantially. I'll be making a 8600m GS Screen shots thread soon where people can talk about the performance their getting out of this card. I'll update this post when I make the thread.

here it is: Nvidia 8600M performance, general discussion

Hi all,

I have a newbie-ish question (I think):

I've recently installed XP-pro SP2 on the S96S and I had to set Sata to IDE in the bios for XP to recognize the harddisk, as I'm sure you know.

Now I can't turn it back to AHCI, because XP will only boot in IDE-mode - is this a problem performance-wise - and erh... what does it all mean?

please enlighten me

thanks!!

e6410 vs. T410: comparison review

I have owned both machines, so I'm fit to answer questions and offer a small comparison for those on the fence.

Screen: as far as I can tell, lenovo and Dell are using the exact same screen. The Dell is possibly a tiny bit brighter, but not significant.

Speakers: e6410 wins HANDS DOWN. The T410 speakers and headphone jack are very quiet, and I sometimes cannot even hear movies or quiet business presentations using them or the headphone jack. By comparison, the e6410 can easily fill a room with powerful sound that is extraordinarily clear and crisp, even if lacking in bass. The headphone jack on the e6410 can deafen if desired, and that's a good thing.

Keyboard: lenovo T410 wins. Not by much; the e6410 has a very nice keyboard, and is available with backlit keyboard, which the T410 does not have. But the keyboard on the T410 is clearly more of a pleasure to type on. Given how much typing one will do, this is significant.

Pointing stick: the pointing stick is better on the T410 (more accurate, easier to use) but also protrudes more. Therefore, if you hate touch sticks, you might be leaning toward the e6410, except...

Touchpad: T410 hands down. The ALPS garbage they have stuck in the e6410 is just disappointing. It is glitchy and buggy like all ALPS pads I have ever used. It doesn't always pick up scrolling gestures which can be very frustrating, and the "both buttons for middle click" function has issues on the e6410. Some features on the e6410 are not available on the T410 without using an HP driver, but when unlocked, the touchpad on the T410 has more features and is less glitchy.

Heat for lap use: T410. The e6410 gets hot across the whole bottom due to the single aluminum access cover, while the T410 only gets hot in a few spots. The T410 stays cooler at idle and under heavy load on the bottom; this is because the e6410 has the CPU oriented in a downward direction aimed at the bottom of the machine.

Consequently, the e6410 is cooler than the T410 on the top of the machine.

Of note: the fan on the T410 is higher pitched than the e6410, and you can't really tell when the e6410 is at full throttle but you can always tell when the T410 is, and it's annoying. The good news is that unlike Dell, lenovo allows you to change fan speeds and a program called "tpfancontrol" lets you set up the fans and thermal controls any way you like. I cannot find a similar program or method that works for the e6410 (there was a method for the e6400, but it does not work on the e6410).

Heat (general): Neither of these machines have problems with reduced performance due to heat buildup. Both do a good job at keeping the machine cool, they just have different styles, as above. Both run at full speed even under the worst heating conditions.

Build quality: The e6410 is a more solid machine. It has no cracks or creaks or plastic squeaks of any kind. The entire bottom is a large access panel made from metal and has no flex. It is glorious and simple. The machine does not flex anywhere, although the keyboard on the T410 has less flex than the e6410, even after bending the e6410 keyboard to flex less. The t410 has a number of little flexes and clicky clacky plastic bits. The whole top bezel where your hands sit will move down on the edge, causing a nasty sounding rubbing noise. It also clicks underneath this bezel and people on the t410 forum have complained about it. Otherwise, the t410 feels very very solid. It is mostly top wrist bezel and bottom maintenance panel which seem junky.

Maintanence: e6410 win. The entire bottom panel comes off the e6410 with one single screw. The entire motherboard and system are accessible including cpu, heatsink, fan, ram, wifi card, etc. simply by removing one hefty screw and sliding the panel away. The panel is held tight to the machine by sliding clips which are kept from sliding because they would have to shear through the screw. It's solid, it's tight, there is no play on the panel (there IS play on my t410's access panel, even though it is 1/10th the size). This is as easy as maintenance gets. The keyboard on the e6410 can be removed by undoing some clips under the battery (removing a top size bezel) and then removing two screws and sliding. The keyboard doesn't even have a ribbon connector; it is a single rigid unit with metal contacts on the bottom which slide into a keyboard connector. Everything about maintenance is easier on the e6410. The t410 is also fairly easy to maintain, but you have to remove many more pieces to get to some parts. There is a single small access panel on the bottom allowing you to access only one of the two ram slots and a wifi card.

Ergonomics are much better on the T410. The e6410 has square edges on the front which dig into my hands. The e6410 is not much of a looker, and they used ugly blue LEDs for status lights. By contrast, the T410 has comfortable human-like curves on the front bezel, front edge, keys on the keyboard, speaker buttons, lid, latch, and touchpad buttons. The t410 uses easy to see but non distracting green LEDs for indicators, with light orange on the mute buttons. The dell by comparison is all flat surfaces and hard square corners which are at best uninspired and at worst downright uncomfortable or even painful over time.

Latching Mechanism
: You wouldn't think this would be an issue, but the latch on the e6410 feels cheap and weird and sometimes gets caught on something inside when I try to open with it. By contrast the latch on the t410 is perfect.

Odd accessories: e6410. Things missing on the T410 that I love on the e6410: LED battery check on the battery, wind up cables on the AC adapter, backlit keyboard, status light on AC adapter.. (T410 AC Adapter has NO INDICATION that it is plugged in and working, while the e6410 has an led on the plug right where it connects to your laptop).

The T410 has a "thinklight" instead of a backlight keyboard. For many people, this is actually more useful than a backlit keyboard. As stated below, the T410 also has better utility software by a mile.

Included software: T410. The T410 has very good power management software which Dell simply doesn't have. As a result, the T410 gets more battery life than the e6410 when they both have a 9 cell battery and same CPU/graphics.

Service/Warranty: DELL A THOUSAND TIMES. Dealing with dell is a pleasure, dealing with lenovo is a pain in the the entire time. You will hate your life. But Dell is a joy and they bend over backwards for you.

I hope this answers questions anyone has.

Really? Anyone with a decent Philips can take the TP apart in less than 5 min and spare parts are everywhere on Ebay.

When did IBM tech support start sucking this much? It's not Lenovo's support that you contacted.

2. I don't know or care who lenovo contracts for support. The easyserv station I dealt with SUCKED. They never called back, they took days to get a single issue processed, and I had to argue with them over the phone. By comparison, getting dell to fix two issues on my e6410 was a single call, with no explanation as to why it was broken, and then they overnighted parts to me without me even sending the old ones back. Dell then called me back the next day to see if I was satisfied or if I needed anymore help. It was almost annoying how much they cared, until I experienced lenovo's service. They also send me countless emails to keep me updated on the precise status of my machine, while lenovo sent me only one email with bizarrely no content (no body text) and all the content was in an attachment with no file type. Weird.

Dell will also exchange or return your latitude for the first 30 days no questions asked and no restocking fee. Lenovo just can't compete on this issue.

XPS M1530 Partitionless Recovery!

Hi all,

This website has helped me out no end in the last few months in choosing a new Dell XPS, which is now being built. BUT the very day I went to order my new XPS 15, my XPS M1530 suddenly and rapidly spiralled to its death (I'm sure it must have known!). As it turns out the hard disk seems to have suffered a catastrophic failure but that is by the by.

What I would like to know is if there is anyway I can return my system to its factory settings from its current state. Normally this would be easy as I would have the disks (which I don't) or a burned copy of the recovery partition (which I don't!), or a recovery partition (guess what...I don't!). Part of the reason for this is that I bought the laptop as a refurbished model with 11 months warranty to run, but it would appear that the recovery partition and regular Dell set up was replaced by a more standard Windows Vista set up - so no Media Direct, no recovery partition and no ability to burn the disks.

I have called Dell and they will not send me a disk any more, so my options are short. Is it possible to download the info/OS from Dell in a way that would recognise that it has an OEM license etc? My only other hope is finding someone with a copy of the recovery disks for a similar XPSM1530 and trying to run that. Oh, I guess I could buy a copy of Windows and clean install but that seems expensive considering I had a genuine install of it and it's not worth that much these days and that Ill probably just give it to my mum!

Any ideas welcome and gratefully received.

Thanks for your help!

PS very much looking forward to these hassles being over with the arrival of the new XPS 15!

Reply 1 : XPS M1530 Partitionless Recovery!

Which version of Windows was installed on the M1530 and was it 32 bit or 64 bit?

Reply 2 : XPS M1530 Partitionless Recovery!

It was Vista Home Premium 32bit. Thanks for you reply.

Reply 3 : XPS M1530 Partitionless Recovery!

You can get the disk from Dell, it's called an Operating System Reinstallation DVD and costs about 65 + P&P.

If they won't sell you one let me know and I'll see if I've got a spare one I can let you have.

Reply 4 : XPS M1530 Partitionless Recovery!

I've tried twice and after some umming and arring they said they couldn't send me one for security reasons (I have moved address a lot, not sure if that was the reason) but basically they weren't keen on sending out a copy of the disk. I guess I have had the laptop for three years or more now.

I have to be honest and say I didn't offer to pay them (and they didn't offer the opportunity), but seeing as I have paid them once it didn't seem to make sense when I could just buy a copy of Windows 7 instead. I would probably rather try and find an old XP disk than spend lots on an old machine.

Am I right in thinking that this disk will recognise that it is a Dell XPS 1530 and self-activate?

The Dell reinstallation disk will detect the machine and self activate so no key issues as long as the OS is the same as originally installed, it also has the original drivers (same as a slipstream install disk) so you don't then have to spend 2 hours looking for drivers.

Not laughing at you but this sounds a lot like the day I stopped at the car dealership, just looking mind you then when I got in my car....she didn't want to start! After I ensured her she wasn't getting traded in she started up and off we went. I may have a copy of the disk you need, I'll check and PM you later. No charge, just pay it forward. And yes it will auto activate as long as your machine is a Dell. Windows 7 however depends on your SLIC but Vista shouldn't be an issue.

That would be brilliant LordRasta! Really kind of you to even look for me.

Re the death of my 1530, I couldn't believe it either. If I wasn't a scientifically minded person I could almost believe it had a soul ("had" being the operative word!). I have since extracted my hard disk and have Active@Undelete running on it for the last 48hours. Luckily it looks like I can retrieve a lot of my docs/photos/music etc that weren't backed up so once my new machine arrives I can find a new home for the 1530. Best get looking for a new hard disk!

Thanks again!

Thank you very much for the info pinsb. It seems bizarre that people can know so little about something they own like a software license. Not surprisingly, for the sake of 5 I ordered the recovery disk set with my XPS15.

ASUS doesn't have it.

Are you sure? I thought you could just order it from them.

Nah, it's not available from them till approximately September. You can try asusparts.eu if you're up to it. I have one on the way from them but no telling if it's the right part or anything. I decided to give it a go.

I've heard any of the G series hard drive brackets work. Someone took out one from their G50 for their G73 without any difficulty.

Dunno though. I haven't tried myself so I couldn't tell you first hand.

Only person I heard this from didn't post any pics and didn't answer any of my other questions regarding it. Until I see some pics I wouldn't put too much effort into geting ahold of one of those brackets.

I just looked at the G50 bracket and it looks the same as the G73 one, with the exception of the screw braces coming off the far end from the connector (which you could remove anyway.

Spacing's off on it I believe. Seriously though, give it a whirl if you're up for it. There are a lot of people wanting to figure out a solution to this.

Not true. I have a G72 and my son has my old G50VT. Neither bracket fits in the G73. I just use a bit of foam like the G50VT BB version came with in the second drive bay.

Cheers,

Just got my caddy in from asusparts.eu which is currently (as far as I know) the only place to get them. Fits perfectly. What's funny is they order it from Asus and apparently Asus can't get it for you right now.

Thanks! I'm gonna try that store. Do you have the link for the bracket? I didn't find it there yet.

Looks like an ok system, if a bit generic, with the only real problem being 1366 x 768 on a 16'' screen.

Reply 2 : MSI GE600 coming out Early April

No FHD+ and quad core make this a no go for me.

Reply 3 : MSI GE600 coming out Early April

Nice book, if purely for gaming this will perform fine, regardless of res on that screen, the combo boasts alot of power there, and the machine looks quite nice.

Reply 4 : MSI GE600 coming out Early April

Seems good, but it's too big for what I'm looking for. Switchable graphics is nice, but it goes best with portability.

Reply 5 : MSI GE600 coming out Early April

Better gpu and they would've had me on board

Reply 6 : MSI GE600 coming out Early April

Is that a fingerprint reader ? It's more of an entertainment system than gaming.

Reply 7 : MSI GE600 coming out Early April

Aye certainly does look like it scans fingers,

I agree with the entertainment part for sure, although i'd say its in the high end of entertainment and low end of gaming (Mainly due to that lovely low res lol.)

Reply 8 : MSI GE600 coming out Early April

its a bit bland for a $1000 notebook ...

No BD , I don't know what to make of it really. Those specs should be for the Xslim series or classics
